Season 2: Face and hands.
FRIDAY leaves the terminal: a face you can tap, a brain on a server, a memory, and hands that do real things.
FRIDAY leaves the terminal. Build it a face you can tap (HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with replies that stream in), a brain on your own server (an API with checks, retries and tests), a memory (a real database you query by hand) and hands that do real things (tools it cannot misuse). Then put it online with sign-in, reachable from your phone: Project 1.
How you learn
Read and fix HTML, CSS and JavaScript, design an API, write SQL by hand, and code the tool loop yourself.
What you build
FRIDAY online: a chat page, your own server and database, real tools and sign-in, reachable from your phone.
The weeks
- Week 5A face
You can read and fix a simple web page, make it readable and accessible, react to clicks, and stream a model reply onto the page as it arrives.
- Week 6A brain on a server
You can run a small Python server, design its API, reject bad input, survive a model that says no, and prove it all works with tests.
- Week 7Remembering things
You can design tables for FRIDAY's tasks and chats, ask them questions in SQL, change them with migrations, use the database safely from Python, and keep data right when two things happen at once.
- Week 8Hands, and out into the world
You can give FRIDAY tools it can't misuse, connect it to real services, protect it with sign-in, and put it online so it answers from your phone.
Projects
- Project 1: FRIDAY goes online
A chat page, your own server and database, real tools and sign-in, reachable from your phone. Weeks 5–8.
Skills you prove
Tiles on the periodic table of skills that this season lights up.
- Web pages
- Build a web page with HTML, CSS and JavaScript that reacts to the user (week 5)
- API design
- Design and build a small HTTP API that validates everything it receives (week 6)
- Databases & SQL
- Store data in a database and query it with SQL, safely under concurrent use (week 7)
- Deploy
- Deploy with tracing and dashboards for cost per task and latency (week 8)
Checkpoint test: Face and hands
After week 8. FRIDAY is online with sign-in, and remembers you after a restart.
- Explain, without notes, how a tap on your phone reaches FRIDAY's server, its database and the model, and comes back
- Write a SQL query with a JOIN and a placeholder by hand, and say why the placeholder stops SQL injection
- Project 1 is live over HTTPS with sign-in, and its tests pass from a fresh clone
- Show a tool FRIDAY can't misuse, and explain what your code checks before it acts
